Next week, Barcelona comes alive with the vibrant sounds of The Big Sing Barcelona, a unique festival celebrating the art of musical theatre improv. If you’re a fan of spontaneous storytelling, catchy tunes, theatrical magic, and getting up close and personal with some of the best musical theatre improvisers in Europe, this event is tailor-made for you.

What is The Big Sing Barcelona?

The Big Sing Barcelona is a one-of-a-kind festival dedicated to musical theatre improvisation. Sponsored and put together by the folks at BIG (Barcelona Improv Group), one of the most organized and successful English language theatre groups in the city. Unlike traditional theatre performances, this festival showcases artists who create entire musicals on the spot, guided sometimes by audience suggestions and sometimes by musical structures and an experienced director who challenges the actors to pull off the seemingly impossible, all in the spirit of good fun, quick wits, and a healthy dose of ridiculousness combined with skill. The musicals will see will be off the top of the dome, and entirely original!

In addition to the performances there are workshops, where performers learn the tricks and taps of musical theatre improvisation. There are workshops for all levels, from brand new to experienced professional. Some of the workshops end up as the performances at the end of the day! (Most of the workshops are sold out or are on their waiting lists. If you want to participate, don’t delay! Go here! ).

This is the third year of the festival. In the past they have hosted improv companies and performers from Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United States and many other places as well. This year will feature an Improvised version of Hamilton, and groups from Germany, the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Spain. See below for all of the details!

When and Where is the Big Sing Barcelona?

The festival takes place in four locations, all within a 600 meter walk of one another in Eixample (although the shows on D’Elkano cross over into the newly fashionable neighborhood of Poblé Sec)

Most of the workshops and the opening and closing night parties take place at the BIG Headquarters, (Carrer de Comte Borrell 143.).

All of the main stage shows are at Calabria 66 (Carrer de Calabria 66), a public space and community access center at (predictably) Calabria 66!

The Thursday and Friday night late shows as well as a few workshops take place at The BCN Studio (Carrer d’Elkano 28).

The Intro to Rap workshop on Saturday the 28 is being hosted at Vocal Core (Carrer d’Entenca 118).
